The mission of the Health Literacy Committee is to improve the health of Clevelanders by making health information easy to understand and use. Following are past projects that helped further this mission:

National Health Literacy Month Campaign (2018)

In October 2018, Healthy Cleveland’s Health Literacy Committee implemented a media campaign promoting National Health Literacy Month, reaching thousands of Cleveland residents. This is celebrated each October by a variety of national and local health organizations to promote health literacy awareness and concepts. Outputs of the month-long campaign included 5,000 wallet cards distributed, 16 posters placed in street-level kiosks around the city, daily posts on Healthy Cleveland social media, 2 interviews with TV20’s Healthy Cleveland segment, and an introductory training on health literacy to CDPH staff to lead into working on the Horowitz Center for Health Literacy’s Health Literacy Champions toolkit. The wallet cards, which provide tips for healthcare visits, have also been translated into Spanish and are available for further outreach. Over 10,000 people were reached on Twitter and over 1,100 on Facebook. Interviews on TV20 will run annually to continue sharing health literacy information with viewers!

Health Insurance Guide (2015)

Knowing that health insurance can be complicated and overwhelming, the Health Literacy Committee took on the daunting task of creating a health insurance guide aimed toward helping people understand health insurance terms, processes, and resources. This guide can be viewed, downloaded, or printed here.
